Christmas Choral Music
This short piece can be used as part of an Advent or Christmas service, but is equally at home at any other time of year. The atmospheric opening makes use of a spoken text from the Wild Goose Resource Group of the Iona Community, set against a low note played on the organ and hummed by the choir. The words "gloria in excelsis Deo" unfold gradually, interspersed with sections of the narrative. At the declamation "We believe in one God!" the congregation respond with "maker and mover of heaven and earth", whereupon the choir develop the Gloria theme in a series of jubilant cascading phrases. After a pause, three quiet phrases bring the music to a restful close.
